Indonesia’s Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Durden said today that Chinese short video platform TikTok is still violating Indonesia’s rules prohibiting in-app transactions after investing in Indonesia’s largest e-commerce platform to restart online shopping business.

Reuters reported that TikTok was forced to shut down TikTok Shop, a relatively new e-commerce service in Indonesia, after Indonesia banned online shopping on social media platforms last year on the grounds of protecting the personal information of small businesses and users.

TikTok, a Chinese company owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, has completed a deal agreed in December to acquire a 75.01 percent stake in GoTo’s e-commerce company Tokopedia for $840 million, Indonesian tech group GoTo said last month.

Teten Masduki, who often spoke out against TikTok Shop before the ban last year, told reporters that TikTok still hasn’t complied with the rules.

He said: “The Minister of Trade must reprimand TikTok to make it compliant, otherwise… The prestige of the government will be damaged.”

TikTok’s representative in Indonesia did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Indonesia’s trade ministry said it was still considering how to deal with the incident.

TikTok said last year that it intended to invest billions of dollars in Southeast Asia, including in Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s largest economy.
